Constraints on the refractory linings of cement rotary kilns have particularly increased for the last 10 years due to the use of more and more agressive burning materials (industrial wastes, tyres, low quality petroleum refining residue…). Consequently, the quality of refractories had to be improved.
Andalusite based fired bricks are applied in areas where the temperature is too high for fireclay bricks such as the lower part of the preheater.
The safety zone of the rotary kiln and the hot part of the grate cooler where thermomechanical stress occurs (temperature above 1200°C) is also a recommended application for andalusite based bricks.
Unshaped linings applied by gunning or shotcreting presently compete with traditionnal shaped linings. Consequently, more and more andalusite based castables (mainly low cement castables) are applied because of their high thermal shock resistance and hot mechanical properties.
These new applications are completed with precast shapes such as nose ring and burner pipe.
